Chaffed

The harvest season came with a beehive of activities on the slopes. The best crop in this continuum though was beans. You just had to line up, bottom up (get set) and then start uprooting the dried stuff making sure not to break the pods. After uprooting we’d put them on a canvas/sacky material, allow them to dry further and then beat the crap out of them. Once beaten, twice down and so the beans would follow the gravitational pull and rest in peace. The pods would then be removed and placed away in a heap where we’d have an opportunity to jump on the makeshift trampoline. We’d jump and somersault until our bones were aching from every which way.
Thereafter winnowing the beans in the wind and watching the chaff fly away from you like it was singing, ‘I’ll fly away’ was always bittersweet. One moment the chaff would be flying away from you like you had the plaque, then the next moment the wind would change course and the chaff would be all over your face.
However eating a plate of madodo with Ugali or rice in the evening meant all the sins of the wind were forgiven. Now it was just us competing to remove wind from our stomachs either by way of mouth or by you know where. Mnyambuliko wa vitenzi kanoga. The best marksman would stand a chance of becoming a karaū at the prestigious police college 😂😂.
